What is JTAS?
JTAS (Junior Texas Astronomical Society) is sponsored by the Texas Astronomical
Society of Dallas, Texas (TAS) to meet the needs of students interested
in learning about astronomy and space.
TAS and JTAS were founded back in the 1950s. Today, JTAS has two sections:
Juniors for grades 2-7, and Teen TAS (TTAS) for students from grades 8-12.
Each section has two meetings a month. The first meeting of the month
is a joint meeting for both groups, where we have an invited speaker to
give presentations on astronomy and space science. The second meeting of
the month is separate for each group and a presentation is given by a student.
We have had presentations on choosing a telescope, using a telescope,
black holes, neutron stars, and different NASA missions.
Our meetings are currently held online via ZOOM. The JTAS meetings are
on Saturday at 1:00 pm and the TTAS meetings are on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Our Story
The Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas was chartered in 1955. Membership
is open to anyone having an interest in astronomy and related subjects.
JTAS was founded in 1961, and has a well-respected history of developing
young astronomers in the DFW area.
